Analysis of “Improved Professional Development through Teacher Leadership” by Jorge Varguez

In my opinion, teachers are the source of knowledge in any institution, they have different talents and abilities and that means that they have their own way of teaching. Here in Mexico many teachers have effective teaching methods that can be shared to other teachers so they can upgrade their teaching skills and help the main cause which is to facilitate student learning. Teachers and other staff members have a better idea on their situation, including information on students, parents, and other teachers, than most individuals in positions of formal authority.
Sometimes the school structures make teachers become isolated in their classrooms and that means that they don’t have contact with other teachers, thus making a teacher council unknown due to the poor interaction between teachers. The pedagogy and professional responsibility standards include the need to work and share ideas with other professional teachers. These responsibilities include: the requirement to engage in collaborative decision making and problem solving with other educators to support students’ learning and wellbeing, as well as participate in decision making, problem solving, and sharing ideas and expertise with other group members.
Teachers should be individual leaders when they are in their classrooms, students have to respect them and follow his instructions in order to fulfill a good learning acquisition. School authorities should respect the teacher’s boundaries (the teacher’s classroom and students). By having teachers with leadership it not only helps the classroom or the overall school but it may be of great use that teachers become administrative collaborators in the institution. Everything comes down to one thing which is: create people who have principles, values, charisma, and a positive view of improving the quality of teaching in any school institution (to the most prestige schools and to the rural community schools).

  1. Jorge's text and Vale's text complement each other. In Jorge's we can see the importance teachers have as leaders because they are in contact with students, parents and authorities and also because they are involved with every aspect of the learning-teaching environment. In Vale's we can see how important is to give them the power to be the leaders because they are key elements in the process mentioned.
